Verify user workstations containing sensitive data are in access-controlled areas. Users must maintain control of, and protect, mobile systems. If systems are not adequately protected, this is a finding.
Establish site policy that ensures workstations containing sensitive data are located inside a controlled access area. Establish a policy on protecting mobile systems outside of controlled areas.
Determine if any shared accounts exist. If no shared accounts exist, this is NA. Any shared account must be documented with the ISSO. Documentation must include the reason for the account, who has access to this account, and how the risk of using a shared account (which provides no individual identification and accountability) is mitigated. If such documentation does not exist, or is not current, this is a finding. Note: As an example, a shared account may be permitted for a help desk or a site security personnel machine, if that machine is standalone and has no access to the network.
Create or update shared accounts documentation that minimally contains the name of the shared account(s), the system(s) on which the accounts exist, and the individuals who have access to the accounts. Remove any shared accounts that do not meet the requirements.
Support for the initial release of Windows 8 ended 12 January 2016. After this date, systems must have Windows 8.1 installed. Run "winver.exe". If the "About Windows" dialog box does not display: "Microsoft Windows Version 6.3 (Build 9600)" or greater this is a finding.
Update the system to a version of the operating system supported by the vendor. Support for the initial release of Windows 8 ended 12 January 2016. After this date, systems must have Windows 8.1 installed.
If V-19910 from an antivirus STIG has been applied to the system, the signature verification portion of this requirement is NA. Verify a supported DoD antivirus product has been installed on the system. If McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 Patch 3 or later is not installed on the system, this is a finding. And If a product other than McAfee VirusScan Enterprise is used and V-19910 from an antivirus STIG has not been applied to the system, verify the date of the antivirus signature. If the antivirus program signature has not been updated within the past 7 days, this is a finding. The version numbers and the date of the signature can generally be checked by starting the antivirus program. The information may appear in the antivirus window or be available in the Help >> About window. The location varies from product to product.
Install McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8 or later on the system. Update the signature file at least every 7 days.
Analyze the system using the Security Configuration and Analysis snap-in. (See "Performing Analysis with the Security Configuration and Analysis Snap-in" in the STIG Overview document.) Expand the Security Configuration and Analysis tree view. Navigate to Local Policies -> Security Options. Determine if system recovery backup procedures are in place that comply with DoD requirements. Any of the following would be a finding: -The site does not maintain emergency system recovery data. -The emergency system recovery data is not protected from destruction and stored in a locked storage container. -The emergency system recovery data has not been updated following the last system modification.
Implement system recovery procedures that include maintaining emergency system recovery data, protecting that data from destruction and storing it in a locked storage container, and updating it following each and every system modification.
Open the Computer Management Console. Expand the "Storage" object in the left pane. Select the "Disk Management" object. If the file system column does not indicate "NTFS" as the file system for each local hard drive, this is a finding. Some hardware vendors create a small FAT partition to store troubleshooting and recovery data. No other files must be stored here. This must be documented with the ISSO.
Format all local partitions/drives to use NTFS.

Select the following fields, and click "Add" for each entry: UserName SID LastLogonTime AcctDisabled Review the "LastLogonTime". If any enabled accounts have not been logged on to within the past 35 days, this is a finding. The following accounts are exempt: Built-in administrator account (SID ending in 500) Built-in guest account (SID ending in 501) Application accounts Disabled accounts Review the list to determine the finding validity for each account reported. If the organization has a need for special purpose local user accounts such as a backup administrator account (see V-14224), this must be documented with the ISSO. This would not be a finding. Dormant accounts that have been reviewed and deemed to be required must be documented with the ISSO.
Regularly review accounts to determine if they are still active. Accounts that have not been used in the last 35 days must be removed or disabled.

Verify the local system boots directly into Windows. Open Control Panel. Select "System". Select the "Advanced System Settings" link. Select the "Advanced" tab. Click the Startup and Recovery "Settings" button. If the drop-down list box "Default operating system:" shows any operating system other than Windows 8, this is a finding.
Ensure Windows 8 is the only operating system on a device. Remove alternate operating systems.
Review the local Administrators group. Only the appropriate administrator groups or accounts responsible for administration of the system may be members of the group. For domain-joined workstations, the Domain Admins group must be replaced by a domain workstation administrator group. Systems dedicated to the management of Active Directory (AD admin platforms, see V-36436 in the Active Directory Domain STIG) are exempt from this. AD admin platforms may use the Domain Admins group or a domain administrative group created specifically for AD admin platforms (see V-43711 in the Active Directory Domain STIG). Standard user accounts must not be members of the local administrator group. If prohibited accounts are members of the local administrators group, this is a finding. The built-in Administrator account or other required administrative accounts would not be a finding.
Configure the system to include only administrator groups or accounts that are responsible for the system in the local Administrators group. For domain-joined workstations, the Domain Admins group must be replaced by a domain workstation administrator group. Systems dedicated to the management of Active Directory (AD admin platforms, see V-36436 in the Active Directory Domain STIG) are exempt from this. AD admin platforms may use the Domain Admins group or a domain administrative group created specifically for AD admin platforms (see V-43711 in the Active Directory Domain STIG). Remove any standard user accounts.
Verify security configuration tools, or an equivalent process, are being used to configure Windows systems to meet security requirements. Security configuration tools that are integrated into Windows, such as Group Policies and Security Templates, may be used to configure platforms for security compliance. If an alternate method is used to configure a system (e.g., manually using the DISA Windows Security STIGs, etc.) that achieves the same configured result, this is acceptable.
Implement a process using security configuration tools or the equivalent to configure Windows systems to meet security requirements.
The default ACL settings are adequate when the Security Option "Network access: Let Everyone permissions apply to anonymous users" is set to "Disabled" (V-3377). If the default ACLs are maintained and the referenced option is set to "Disabled", this is not a finding. Verify the default permissions for the sample directories below.
